From 03-17-2012 to 11-11-2012 : Temporary exhibition
MATHIS Cars 1900-1950

The Automobile Museum presents a very interesting collection of the car brand Emile Ernest Charles Mathis.

This Alsatian man, who was born the 15th of March, 1880 in Strasbourg and died the 3rd of August, 1956 in Geneva worked between 1902 and 1904 for De Dietrich with Ettore Bugatti.
Bugatti was responsible for designing and Mathis for marketing.
In 1904, De Dietrich stopped their collaboration.
Mathis hence created his company "Mathis and co" hiring Bugatti.
Between the two world wars, Mathis was the 4th French manufacturer, behind Renault, Peugeot and Citroen.
During World War II, he joined the U.S. with the plans for its plant to show where were the hotspots: the Germans used his plant to build munitions and aircraft engines.
He participated alongside the Allies to build very large numbers of ammunitions and was decorated by the U.S. Army.
After the end of the war, he returned to France, but without child, his business declined and he sold it to Citroën in 1953.
The html clickable link here allows you to access the Mathis club, located near Lyon.
Cars presented by the temporary exhibition of the automobile museum of Valencay allows you to trace the saga of this great French brand of cars.
