Mas d'Azil Cave

Description:

Major site of the Pyrenees, the cave of the Mas d'Azil is rich in bones of mammoths, bears and woolly rhinoceros.

The themes explained in the 300 m² wide interpretation center are:
- The geology and formation of the cave with a very surprising 3D model,
- Paleontology and the first cave inhabitants, the animals, among which ones the most emblematic is the cave bear, but with also the mammoth and the woolly rhinoceros,
- Prehistory through the proven presence of several cultures: the Aurignacian, the Magdalenian and the Azilian,
- Prehistoric art with a facsimile of a part of the cave that is not accessible today because of the access which is difficult and because of preservation purpose,
- The history of the site with the famous episode of the siege of the cave, done by Richelieu,
- The excavation of the first archaeologists.

Comments:

The site of the cave has just been renovated.
You will then be able to enjoy the new development of the cave and the center of interpretation through new spaces and new highlighting.

The main entrance is a huge porch that opens to the South. It is about 70 meters hight and 50 meters large. It lets the Arize River entering.

You will like to visit the store as well as the rest of the place: you will indeed find reproductions of prehistoric tools , books for children, ...

Le Mas d'Azil is at 78km away from Toulouse (with 34km on highway), in the South of Toulouse.

From Toulouse, take the A620 / A64 and E80 / E80 towards Foix / Tarbes / Lourdes / Saint-Sebastien.
Take Exit 27 " Carbon / Rieux-Volvestre / Montesquieu-Volvestre" then the D627 still in the same direction.
Cross Carbon, Rieux-Volvestre and finally Montesquieu-Volvestre.
Continue on the D628, cross Sabarat, take the D119 and then the D419.
Cross the Mas d'Azil then get to the cave.
