Swam of meteorites: the Perseides

Domaine(s) : Astronomy
A litle shooting star far away in the atmosphere
Picture taken per Ron Garan, ISS Expedition 28 Crew, NASA on August the 13th, 2011

Description:

This swarm is visible from July the 17th to August the 24th.
The Perseid are meteors coming from a dust cloud that is close to the orbit of the Swift-Tuttle comet which was discovered on July 15 1862 but was observed since 1737 by a Jesuit in China.
This comet is gone far enough, at 80 million km away from Earth, ahead of its orbit. For comparison, the Earth-Moon distance is equal to 380,000 kilometers.

Planning:

This swarm of meteors is the Easter one.

This swarm is visible from July the 17th to August the 24th.
The maximum of density of meteors will be able to be seen the two nights between the 11th and the 13th of August. Disclaimer : The management team of the destination has the possibility to change the opening days and hours without prior communication.

Comments:

This year could be quite exceptional, because the Earth is going through a new part of the trail of the comet that it has never crossed before.

The swarm of meteors is visible in the Perseus constellation in the northeast at about 45° above the horizon.
