The Secretariat of the Bonn Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS, organization of the UN) said jointly with the Partnership for the Survival of Great Apes (GRASP, UNESCO) and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) that 2009 will be the year of the Gorilla, thanks in part to support particularly important in France and Monaco at the conference held in Paris in October 2007.
Three of the four gorilla species are Critically Endangered said the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).



The Year of the Gorilla is part of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
The action plan called 'Agreement for the Conservation of gorillas and their habitats' aims to save endangered species, on the following:
- Helping local people to discourage poaching,
- Expand ecotourism programs that help preserve species successfully in Rwanda and Uganda,
- Reduce the commercial hunting of bushmeat,
- Strengthen monitoring,
- Reduce up to 70% consumption of coal and firewood by promoting ovens rocket.

- The hunt for traditional medicine,
- The destruction of habitat by deforestation, mining and production of charcoal,
