The objectives announced by UNESCO on the organization of the International Year of Chemistry are: - Increasing appreciation and understanding of chemistry by the general public and increase awareness of the chemistry given the challenges of the sustainable development, - Encourage young people's interest in science, - Generate enthusiasm for the promising future of chemistry, - Celebrating women's contributions to science in occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Marie Curie.

Some events take place until the end of the school year, so the end of the International Year of Chemistry in 2011 has been set to June the 30th of 2012 in this page even if the closing ceremony will be held in Brussels on December the 1st, 2011.

The International Year of Chemistry has been created by UNESCO as well as the international year of physics in 2005 or gthe astronomy one in 2009. Unesco and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) are responsible for organizing the global event that should show the prominent role of chemistry in human activities.
