 Les Baux-de-Provence is a beautiful village perched on a mountain not far from Avignon (30km) and Arles (20km) in the canton of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in the district of Arles in the department of Bouches-du-Rhone. Thanks to its position both perched and cut-off, the place has been continuously occupied since prehistoric times until now. With 4000 inhabitants in the 13th century, the village has more than 400 in the late 19th. In 1821, a geologist discovers an alumina-rich red rock, that he called bauxite. After World War II, the village turns to be a cultural and touristic center. Finally, it is ranked among the most beautiful villages of France in 1998. Today, Les Baux-de-Provence have less than 400 people and welcome more than one and half million visitors a year.  13520 Les Baux-de-Provence By car: From Avignon (30km), take the motorway A7, exit 24 (Avignon Sud). Then follow the direction of Noves and Saint-Rémy de Provence. From Marseille (80km), take the motorway A7 towards Lyon then the A54 towards Arles, exit 11 (Saint Martin de Crau). Follow then the direction of Maussane les Alpilles. From Nimes (50km), take the motorway A9-A54, exit 7 direction Arles and continue to Fontvieille. By plane: The nearby airports are those of "Nimes Arles Camargue", "Marseille Provence", "Avignon Cheval Blanc" and "Nice Côte d'Azur." By train: The TGV station is the one of Avignon (2h40 from Paris), and those with the regional train, the TER, are those of Tarascon and Saint-Martin de Crau.  A weekend is ideal for enjoying the village and the region, as well as to enjoy the festival "a-part" on Summer. Disclaimer : The management team of the destination has the possibility to change the opening days and hours without prior communication.  The village still uses careers which participated to its fame, and from where is extracted the limestone used to build the various structures in the region. Each summer, the village organizes the festival "a'part"; 2013 is the 4th edition. This contemporary art festival turns in 2013 around a large theme of many expressions, "Reinventing our nature with all our senses,". |
